Social Services Department

The Social Services Department at Children’s of Alabama is staffed by more than 40 Alabama-licensed Social Workers. Our Social Workers are an essential part of the multi-disciplinary team as they work to empower and advocate for our patients and their families. Through assessment and intervention, they identify and address the social, emotional, and environmental needs of patients and families that affect or are affected by the child’s illness and/or disability. Social Work services include but are not limited to Pre-Admission Planning, Discharge Planning, Crisis Intervention, Support and Guidance, Care Coordination, Bereavement and Grief Support, Resource Identification and Referral, Case Consultation, Education, Financial Assistance, and Advocacy.

Field Internship

At Children’s of Alabama, Social Workers play a critical role in the medical team to promote the well-being of patients and their families. The Department consists of Licensed MSW Practitioners who have a vast skill set providing services in Crisis Intervention, Case Consultation, Emotional Support pertaining to Adjustment to Illness, Education to encourage Adherence to medical plan, and a variety of other services to ultimately remove barriers to care and promote optimal health.

Our department is dedicated to promoting the skills development of the future generations of Social Work. We currently partner with a multitude of Accredited MSW Programs and follow all CSWE guidelines for internship. MSW Interns at Children’s of Alabama are provided the opportunity to implement the theories and education provided in coursework into every day practice through casework and advocacy. Interns are provided the opportunity to network with a variety of community partners to help aid in their skill development.

The Master of Social Work (MSW) Internship Program trains Second Year MSW and Advanced Placement students. Internships are offered in various settings across the hospital, including: Acute and Chronic Inpatient, and Outpatient Clinics in a variety of Medical subspecialties.
