Terra 2022, the 13th World Congress on Earthen Architectural Heritage, will take place in Santa Fe, New Mexico, June 7-10, 2022, with workshops in early June leading up to the Conference. One of the pre-Congress workshops, a TICRAT, will be co-organized by Cornerstones; it will include hands-on presentations and field trips focused on techniques and strategies for conserving and restoring earthen buildings. With financial support from the Getty Foundation and Chamiza Foundation, Cornerstones Community Partnerships and the Getty Conservation Institute will provide scholarships to support speakers and participants from the 19 Native American pueblos and tribes in New Mexico, representatives from tribes and pueblos from other Southwestern states, and representatives from Northern Mexico to attend the Terra 2022 13th World Congress on Earthen Architectural Heritage.
The Congress will be an educational opportunity for those working with or studying earthen architecture. Hundreds of specialists will attend from many fields, including building and construction, site management, conservation, anthropology, architecture, and sustainable development. Workshops, presentations, posters, and digital media will illuminate contemporary research and teach best practices in conserving earthen heritage across the world. Applications for the scholarship are due Tuesday, February 22. They include a letter of intent, a letter of recommendation, and a resume. The scholarship program will significantly help cover attendance, accommodation, and travel costs.

TICRAT Workshop

The International Workshop on the Conservation and Restoration of Earthen Architecture (known by its Spanish acronym TICRAT) is a bi-national partnership between the U.S. National Park Service and its Mexican counterpart, the Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia (INAH). Since 1994, these hands-on workshops have convened adobe experts from both countries to disseminate traditional earthen building practices and ensure the safeguarding of the integrated cultural heritage across the US-Mexico border. TICRAT | New Mexico 2022 is a project of partnerships between the Vanishing Treasures Program of the U.S. National Park Service, University of Arizona’s College of Architecture, Planning, and Landscape Architecture, University of New Mexico Historic Preservation and Regionalism Program, and Cornerstones Community Partnerships. It is administered by Cornerstones.
TICRAT | New Mexico 2022 will include presentations, hands-on workshops and field trips focused on techniques and strategies for conserving and restoring earthen architecture such as adobe brickmaking, building condition assessment, adobe wall repair, and mud plastering.
Our Pre-Terra Video Series
Cornerstones has always been dedicated to preserving the architectural heritage and cultural traditions of New Mexico and the greater Southwest, using a hands-on approach to teach and reinforce these methods to both adults and youth. For our digital presentation for the Terra 2022 Virtual Lead-up Event Series, we wanted to show some instructional videos that bring viewers into job sites to show some techniques of adobe construction. We also wanted to display more documentary-esque work that shows communities volunteering and enjoying being part of building and restoring cultural centers and historic places.
