Silver State Equality Institute's LGBTQ+ Student Advisory Council is seeking students in high school, throughout the state of Nevada, who will work to help Silver State Equality Institute to identify and address issues and concerns students have to improve the school climate for LGBTQ+ students.
The advisory council will meet monthly and may require some work to be completed outside of the meetings. The role of the students is to help identify areas of concern that need to be addressed in high school. Additionally, students will be asked to come up with solutions and create a presentation and/or training to school district stakeholders, lawmakers and others that will explain their concerns and recommended solutions.
Students may be asked to present their findings to the identified stakeholders. All work done will be guided by Silver State Equality Institute staff and the identified community advocates who will be a part of the student council to provide advocacy and mentorship support to the students.
Participation is completely voluntary. A small stipend of $150 will be available to students who are accepted onto the council and actively participate in at least 75% of the meetings and/or presentations/trainings over the course of one year. $75 will be made available after the first meeting when the student is accepted, and the additional $75 will be made available after successful participation in at least 75% of the meetings and/or presentations/trainings.
Acceptance onto the LGBTQ+ Student Advisory Council is at the discretion of Silver State Equality Institute staff and depends upon information submitted on the application and submission of parental permission, if applicable. Students who do not actively participate will be removed from the Student Advisory Council.
Students under 18 years old must have the permission of their parents/legal guardians to participate. Link to parental permission can be found here:
