The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires public transit agencies that provide fixed-route service to provide “complementary paratransit” service to people with disabilities who cannot use the fixed-route bus service because of a disability.  ADA complementary paratransit service must be provided within 3/4 of a mile of a bus route at the same hours and days,
The ADA regulations provide three categories of paratransit eligibility.   All three categories include people who may be able to ride fixed route transit for some trips and not for other trips, and eligibility may be conditional based on the person’s ability to ride fixed route for certain trips.
ADA Complementary Paratransit acts as a safety-net for people with disabilities which prevent them from independently accessing fixed-route public transportation either; all of the time, temporarily or under certain circumstances. This does not include disabilities that only make using fixed-route public transportation complicated or inconvenient.
ADA eligibility assessments ensure that quality ADA paratransit service is reserved for individuals who truly need the service in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Disability alone does not determine paratransit eligibility; the decision is based on the applicant’s functional ability to use the fixed route bus and is not a medical decision.  If a disability only makes riding accessible fixed route buses difficult or inconvenient, you might not be eligible for ADA Complementary Paratransit Service.

ADA Complementary Paratransit service is not intended to be a comprehensive system of transportation that meets all of the travel needs of persons with disabilities.  A ride may combine various types of transportation provided by RFTA to get a person to their destination.
