We’re thrilled to announce the six recipients of the first annual Judy Beck Grant program totaling approximately $13,700. The Beck Family Foundation received close to 20 applications with such diverse and innovative project ideas. The program was created to honor Judy Beck’s environmental legacy in Glenview and 32-year service as park board commissioner. The Judy Beck annual grant will help support generations of new conservation leaders to continue the great work and legacy of building and strengthening our local communities.

The grant program is available to non-profit groups or individuals with projects focusing on environmental conservation, sustainability, community engagement or youth development. According to the Beck Family Foundation, all of the grant recipients were developing projects that would have inspired Judy. All of these projects will make an impact on the community. Here are the high level details about each recipient’s project:

Monarchs in the Rough at Glenview Park Golf Club
The vision of this project is to establish and grow the Monarch butterfly population on the golf course and within the Glenview community. It will create multiple habitats on the course using the existing milkweed areas as small ecosystems.

Emma Chin, Composting Awareness Campaign
Emma created a flowchart on composting as part of her Girl Scouts Silver Award project. Her goal is to generate community awareness about the benefits of composting by printing and distributing copies of her flowchart to inform  people about ways to compost from their backyard to using their local composting company.

Historic Wagner Farm Adventure Area Sensory Gardens
Student farmers who are part of the Be@the Farm Wagner/NSSED partnership will plan, plant and maintain therapeutic planters in the new Wagner Farm playscape adventure area. The planters, including one specifically designed for wheelchair accessibility, will allow visitors to interact with nature using their senses – sight, smell, touch and taste. Student farmers will tie the planters to agricultural themes.

Lexi Turner, Composting Program at Marie Murphy Middle School
Lexi’s project includes hiring a composting company to pick up food scraps  from students and break them down properly. In partnership with the Roots and Shoots Club at the school, focusing on community service, Lexi wants to do more fundraising and awareness about the importance of composting. She’s already developed an informational video and would like to place signage around the school.

Park Center Preschool STEAM Classroom Furniture
As part of the new DCFS preschool for 3 and 4 year olds, a STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics) component has been added to the curriculum. The grant will be used to purchase more STEAM furniture to engage and encourage children’s curiosity in these areas. Ideas include science center, light tables, interactive STEAM library, live habitats and more.

The Grove Food Forest
The project’s goal is to develop a fully functional food forest where visitors can learn about ecological diversity. A food forest is a system of edible plants that are grown together to create a low maintenance, self-sustaining natural habitat. It’s based off of a fully functioning woodland ecosystem. Food harvested from the forest will be donated to local food pantries, used for programs or sold at the local farmers market.
