LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - Michigan is reaching double-digit numbers in deadly crashes, and we’re not even a month into the new year.

Excessive speed, following too closely, and impaired driving are all factors Michigan State Police (MSP) said could lead to someone losing their life on the roads.

“We want to not essentially shock the people. We want them to be aware of what’s going on out there. To said 46 people have died in 24 alone, and the month’s not even over,” said Lt. Rene Gonzalez of MSP.

Nearly a month into the new year, Michigan is already seeing higher fatalities on roadways than it did this time last year. Lt. Gonzalez said State Police don’t have exact information on why so many crashes have happened at the start of the year but knows the factors that have influenced them.

“A lot of these fatalities are due to the distracted driving and alcohol or drugs involved. That’s what we’re seeing is these people are getting out, and they’re not paying attention to the main reason, and that’s to drive that vehicle,” said Gonzalez.

Dakota Williams made the choice of drinking and driving. While it didn’t result in a fatal crash, it did end in jail time.

“I was drinking, came home from the bar late at night. I was speeding, not paying attention to the speeder at all. Then the cop pulled me over and took me to jail; I spent sixty days in jail,” said Williams.

While Williams didn’t lose his life on the road, he understands the impact of his choices and he’s still paying for it.

“I think I’m down like four grand in payments and all that, so people just need to drive safe. It’s not fun going through it, and you can put someone else through hell,” said Williams.

Michigan does have its hands-free law in place. Gonzalez said he hopes to continue to educate the public on the law in hopes of seeing a decrease in fatal crashes.

“We would like to see less crashes, less deaths; that’s what we’re working for. Will it happen? We don’t know; will less happen? That’s what our job to do is,” said Gonzalez.

For now, sending a reminder to avoid risky driving behavior, reducing the number of lives lost on Michigan roads.

MSP said these numbers are unofficial for January because additional crashes may not have been reported yet. Also, some of those injured may die later due to their injuries. However, the numbers are a reminder that these crashes are preventable.
