National School Meal Programs:

The Burbank Unified School District takes part in the
National School Lunch and National School Breakfast Programs.

The National School Meal Programs dictate that all of our children must be offered a complete meal through the Food Service Department which meets the nutritional guidelines of the USDA.

A complete Nutrition (Breakfast) meal consists of 1 entree item of grain, 1 meat or meat alternative may be offered, 1/2 cup fruit or 4 oz juice, and 1 milk. A student must take at least 3 different food items out of the 4 food items offered but may take all 4. At least 1 food item must be fruit or juice.

A complete Lunch meal consists of 1 entree item of meat or meat alternative and grain, 1 milk, 1/2 cup fruit or 4 oz juice, and 1/2 cup vegetable. A student must take at least 3 food components out of the 5 food items offered but may take all 5. At least 1 component must be fruit or vegetable.

A choice of 2 or more fruits, juice, and vegetables are offered daily as well as Fat-Free and 1% Low Fat milk.

Individual food items that are nutritionally compliant are available on an "a la carte" basis. Snack items, such as milk, bottled water, pizza slice, and cookies may be available for individual purchase in the cafeteria but do not qualify for inclusion in the National School Meal Programs.
