Governor Joe Lombardo signed a bill into law that will give $2 million to the state’s leading stay-in-school organization.

SB 189, Keeping Kids in School Act, will provide funding to Communities In Schools of Nevada (CIS).

Governor Joe Lombardo joined local officials in a ceremonial signing at Ronnow Elementary on Thursday.

Funding will help sustain CIS’ plans to add 15 more schools to its operation beginning with the 2023-24 school year.

Gov. Lombardo says CIS gives kids an equal field of opportunity to succeed.

"Growing up in an environment that is not equal to other students, you tend to fail," said Gov. Lombardo. "CIS is that other equalizer, it's an equalizer that provides them the services, counseling, it may be food, it may be clothing, it may be school supplies, and it may be just teaching you the proper way to read."

The organization has a variety of programs for students struggling with attendance, behavior, academic performance, and who are likely to be credit deficient and drop out.

CIS partners with more than 100 schools in the Clark, Elko, Humboldt, and Washoe County school districts.
