Sen. Marshall Speaks on Possible Army Troops Infected with COVID in Oct. 2019

(Washington, D.C., June 24, 2021) – U.S. Senator Roger Marshall, M.D. is demanding answers from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) on possible COVID-19 infections of U.S. Army troops who participated in the 2019 World Military Games that took place in Wuhan, China from October 18-28, 2019. Following completion of the games, athletes from numerous participating countries reported experiencing symptoms similar to those associated with COVID-19. Senator Marshall sent a letter to the Secretary of HHS demanding answers, and just yesterday spoke on the Senate floor about the matter. In case you missed it, here is what they are saying:

  • Washington Post: …Sen. Roger Marshall (R-Kan.) wrote a separate letter to Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra on this issue Tuesday, asking whether his department was aware of any U.S. athletes who fell ill after returning from Wuhan. He also wanted to know whether HHS was either looking into the issue or discussing it with the Defense Department. “The World Military Games’ proximity to the [Wuhan Institute of Virology] and the new details of the athletes potentially being exposed to COVID-19 while participating in the event present an alarming coincidence our government must investigate to establish an accurate timeline of the outbreak,” Marshall wrote. “If these individuals were exposed in October, this evidence will further help us understand the origin of COVID-19 and prepare for future outbreaks.” HHS did not respond to a request for comment.
  • NY Post: Members of Congress are calling on the Biden administration to launch an investigation into whether an international competition in Wuhan, China, involving thousands of athletes from around the world in October 2019 was the world’s first coronavirus “superspreader” event, according to a report on Wednesday… Sen. Roger Marshall wrote separately to Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra about whether the agency was aware of US athletes falling ill after returning from Wuhan. “The World Military Games’ proximity to the [Wuhan Institute of Virology] and the new details of the athletes potentially being exposed to COVID-19 while participating in the event present an alarming coincidence our government must investigate to establish an accurate timeline of the outbreak,” Marshall (R-Kansas) wrote in his letter. “If these individuals were exposed in October, this evidence will further help us understand the origin of COVID-19 and prepare for future outbreaks,” he said.

  • Daily Caller: Congressional Republicans are requesting investigations into the 2019 Military World Games in an effort to determine when the first COVID-19 cases emerged in Wuhan, China… Kansas Sen. Roger Marshall submitted a similar letter to Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) Xavier Becerra on Tuesday. The games were held from Oct. 18-28, 2019 in Wuhan… Marshall noted in his letter, also obtained by the Washington Post, that multiple reported infections associated with the Military World Games suggests that the games could be considered a “‘super spreader’ event, based on the time, location, and reported symptoms of the participating athletes.” Marshall is requesting the results of COVID-19 antibodies tests taken by American participants, and the status of any HHS investigations into athlete illnesses…
  • Washington Post: Two Republican lawmakers are pressing for answers from Pentagon leaders and a top Biden administration official on whether athletes who participated in the 2019 Military Games in Wuhan, China, may have contracted the coronavirus while they were there… Sen. Roger Marshall (R-Kan.) has written to Xavier Becerra, the secretary of Health and Human Services. Some 280 American athletes and staff were among more than 9,000 people from around the world who took part in the games Oct. 18-28, 2019 in Wuhan.

Background:

Senator Marshall has been leading the fight in the Senate to get to the bottom of the origins of COVID. In fact, recently, the Senate recently passed his bipartisan resolution that he worked alongside Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) on that calls for a transparent investigation into the COVID-19 outbreak mandated by the World Health Assembly. The bipartisan Resolution also demands a full, transparent investigation to include the U.S. and our allies and partners around the world if China continues on its path of cover-up and obfuscation.

In January 2020, then Congressman Marshall was the first member of Congress to sound the alarm on the House floor about the spread of COVID-19. As a physician, he would later go on to serve on the frontlines as a volunteer treating patients in Wyandotte County and Seward County.

Senator Marshall has penned several op-eds on COVID. You may click on the links below to view them:
